FAQs Related to Salmon

Last Date Modified: May 26, 2009

  1. Is the salmon used in MOON Munch treats farmed? If yes, is it prone to the I.S.A.infection?
The salmon is farmed and does not have Infectious Salmon Anemia - I.S.A. virus. This salmon is produced
in Southern Chile and not in Northern Chile where the virus was detected. Also, please note
the importance of salmon handling and processing. This is key to the quality of salmon rather than
simply checking for farmed versus wild. This topic is discussed in Volume 1; Issue 2 of our Monthly Newsletter.

  2. How was the water kept pristine as compared to the contaminated waters found from other salmon farms?
The pens are maintained in the uncontaminated fiords of Southern Chile with self cleaning tidal action
with unpolluted ocean water. There are no hormones, no anti-biotics, no carcinogenic substances, and no fungicides used in the water of the fish.

  3. What is the name of the Chilean farm that is the source of MOON Munch's salmon?
Pescara Los Fiordos (PLF), Puerto Montt, Chile.

  4. Is the salmon associated with Marine Harvest(company responsible for much of the infected salmon)?
No, it is not at all associated with Marine Harvest.

  5. How was the fish inspected upon shipment to the USA?
All farmed salmon in this area is required by Chilean law to be inspected on pen by pen basis
before harvest, and shipment to the U.S.A. - by the Chilean Regulatory Agency, Sernapesca, and
complies with USDC and FDA standards.

  6. How does the salmon get the rosy color?
No dyes are used. The color of the salmon flesh is a natural phenomenon from the Krill it feeds upon.
